Ajwain (carom) blossom - the floral source of ajwain honey

Ajwain Honey: The Rare Pakistani Honey Most People Have Never Tasted

The Shah Farms Family

Most honey buyers in Pakistan know acacia and everyone knows sidr. But mention ajwain ka shehad and you usually get one of two reactions: deep enthusiasm from those who grew up with it, or a blank look. This guide is for both.

What ajwain honey is

Ajwain honey is gathered by bees foraging on the blossom of the ajwain plant - the carom whose seeds sit in practically every Pakistani kitchen. When hives are placed in a flowering ajwain crop, the honey carries the plant's signature: a bold, herbal aroma and a warm, gently savoury depth underneath the sweetness. It tastes like no other honey in our range.

Why genuine ajwain honey is rare

Three practical reasons:

  • The crop is limited. Ajwain is grown for seed, not planted on the vast scale of wheat or cotton. Flowering fields large enough to support hives are few.
  • The window is short. Like every mono-floral harvest, the hives must arrive when ajwain blooms and leave before other flowering mixes in.
  • Demand outruns supply. Traditional households prize it, which makes the name worth borrowing - much of what sells as ajwain honey is ordinary honey with the right label.

What it is like in the jar

  • Colour: amber, deeper than acacia, lighter than sidr.
  • Aroma: unmistakably herbal - open the jar and you know.
  • Taste: full-bodied sweetness with a warm, savoury finish. People rarely feel neutral about it: it becomes either your honey or not.
  • Crystallisation: moderate, and completely natural - a good sign, not a fault.

How people traditionally take it

A spoon in warm water in the morning is the classic. It also holds its own in strong chai, in marinades, and anywhere a delicate honey would disappear. If your household keeps desi traditions of taking honey for daily wellbeing, ajwain honey is usually the one the elders ask for by name.

Trying it without commitment

Because ajwain honey has such a distinct personality, we suggest first-timers start with a smaller jar - or include it in a starter trio alongside a gentler honey like acacia.

Our Ajwain Honey is a genuine single-source harvest from our own hives - raw, unfiltered and packed at the farm, like everything we have made since 1974.
